Keeping Riverside Clean and Beautiful

Through the Keep Riverside Clean and Beautiful Program (KRCB), Temple Beth El has officially adopted a one-mile stretch
Of Arlington Avenue between Victoria and Indiana Avenues. Watch for the beautiful signs that say this when you pass this way on the way to Target, California School for the Deaf, Victoria School, or on your way to TBE; the signs let everyone know that TBE cares about our community! To date, we have cleaned our mile of Arlington twice. The first time was difficult because of the long-time accumulation of trash. The other time went quickly because we are “on the job!” Our contract with KRCB Program calls for our TBE team to be out there six times a year, generally every other month. This is a great opportunity for families to participate and a way to earn public service credits if you are applying for a campership, need to fulfill public service requirements for school, or need a mitzvah project for a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. This is a long-term project that is easy, requires just a little organization, and shows that TBE is part of the community of Riverside. While we have one mile, we actually have two miles of area (one mile on each side of Arlington Avenue). There is plenty of room to stretch your legs and provide everyone with some exercise. The City of Riverside furnishes picker-upper tools and safety vests, but you may bring your own tools and gloves as well as a snack, water and plastic bags. All participants sign a waiver. Wear old clothes. All kinds of talents are welcome – even kibbitzers! Wagons are a good idea for little workers. All workers under 16 must be under adult supervision.

KRCB meets at the Target parking lot at 11:00 AM and are done by 1:00 PM the very latest.
Wednesdays every other month, next tentatively scheduled date will be February 22nd

UPDATE: Komen to Continue Funding Planned Parenthood

This week, Reform Jews across the U.S. were vocal in their opposition to grant-making changes at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Foundation that would have eliminated funding for Planned Parenthood’s breast cancer screenings – a health service particularly vital in low income communities. Rabbi David Saperstein, Director of the Religious Action Center [...]

The Real Heartbreak of Komen/Planned Parenthood

The controversy around the defunding/refunding of Planned Parenthood by Susan G. Komen for the Cure can be described, among other things, as disappointing, outrageous, offensive, reckless, narrow-mind and short-sided.  I’ll throw in another:  heartbreaking. This past December I had the opportunity to spend a few minutes with Ambassador Nancy Brinker, sister of Susan Komen and [...]

2 Irans: An Update on the Iranian Nuclear Controversy

In the past few weeks we’ve seen two distinct visions of the Iranian regime: one nation shrouded in secrecy, on the brink of nuclear power, blaming other countries for assassinating its nuclear scientists, and another in direct contrast that appears to value diplomacy as it engages in nuclear talks with the International Atomic Energy Agency [...]

Super PAC Spending: Is DISCLOSE the Answer?

On Tuesday, Super PACs filed reports with the Federal Elections Commission detailing their fundraising and spending activities from October through December 2011. The numbers are astounding, but not surprising if you live in a primary state and have turned on the television once in the last two months. As the battleground for the Republican presidential [...]
