About Us

Temple Beth El's Mission Statement:

Temple Beth El is a diverse Reform Jewish congregation dedicated to worship, study and social responsibility.

The congregation, through the commitment and involvement of our members, serves the spiritual, educational and life-cycle needs of our Temple family and the greater community in order to have a positive impact on the world.

We have been at our current location on the corner of Victoria Avenue and Central Avenue since 1964.

In line with Reform Judaism we welcome Jews of mixed lineage whether it is their mother or father who are Jewish. Our synagogue is full of mixed families who seek an inclusive and welcoming Jewish community in which to raise their children.

We are led by interim Rabbi Phil Cohen, who comes to us from North Carolina and he makes every congregant and visitor feel welcome and included. We are also supported by our charismatic Rabbi Emerita, Suzanne Singer. Rabbi Singer’s intellect, kindness and humor has helped shape our joyful community. Do come along.

Alongside Rabbi Cohen, Marcela Epelbon-Lavi leads on education (from young children to adults) and community development.

We have a dedicated Board who are our lay leaders and trustees, and each have areas of focus.

What you can expect in the community:

  • We are committed to creating meaningful Jewish experiences for our members and their families.
  • We celebrate being intergenerational, welcoming Jews of Color, LGBTQ+, and meeting the needs of all.
  • We work hard to make a difference both within the Jewish community (Tikkun Am) and the wider world (Tikkun Olam). We are proud of our Social Justice work.
  • We are a community who takes responsibility for each other.
  • We raise our young people to be thoughtful, curious, and responsible Jews.
